Reference Goats

We decided to retire Kastor. She is healthy & happy. Kastor has cervical scarring, likely from her 2024 kidding w/two massive 5lbs boys. This is makes Aritfical Insmemination difficult. It also puts Kastor & her kids in danger during labor as the scar tissue does not stretch. Kastor has had difficultly settling & kidding for the last two years. At eight she still have several productive years, but we just don't feel it is worth the risk as we have retained two of her daughters. Our only regret is not keeping a buck out of her, but we might keep a buck out of one of her daughters. Her paternal sister, Lola will be retired after the 2027 Kidding season. They are the only two does left that we brought with us from Washington when we moved back home to Rhode Island.

Kastor is a sweetheart, but our herd bully. She is a Chamoisee/Buckskin Roan with minimal white & moonspots. We discovered her spots June 2021 when she was given a show clip for LA's. She was the first of Jacobim's girls on the stand. We were surprised when we switched to a milking machine and her volume almost doubled! Kastor holds back quite a bit of milk for her kids. She has tested A/B for AlphaS1-Casein. Kastor's dam, Grinny, was line bred AJUD LD SENOR BANDIDO *S. Grinny, her dam & sire were all registered AGS. We also owned Kastor's maternal brother, The UD SOL, and have a few of his granddaughter's in the herd. Sol was one of those goats I should have kept or at least had collected.

Kastor held her own at 2021 Linear's. Her sire, Goldie's boy, vastly improved Kastor's udder over her dam. In Udder Side she scored 12 points higher, in Udder Height 10 points higher & 9 points higher in Medial & Rear Arch compared to her dam. At 2021 LA's, Kastor was terrified in a new place and was uneasy walking around when presented. Appraiser commented that it was hard to evaluate her since she was moving so awkwardly, envision a goat Frankenstein walk. Feels like she can score higher if she were being appraised at home. Her udder is not is not a show udder, but she seems conformationally correct.

Well we right about Kastor, we had LA's on our farm in 2023 and she was just perfect for the appraiser. Kastor scored a FS88 (VEEG) under a very tough but fair appraiser. She scored an average of 5 points higher in Linear Categories over her 2021 appraisal. Kastor also received and E in Rump & Rear Legs. Niamh was born on St Paddy's Day, so she was given our favorite Irish Name. We had to try 3 times to get this little girl! We think she was worth the wait. Her dam is our best milker & her sire is our go to buck. Niamh is A/A for Alpha-s1 Casein, like her dam. We are hoping she will have her dam's quiet, no fuss temperament & her sire's refined dairy look. So far, she is quiet, except at feeding time. Her quiet temperament makes it tough on heat detection.

Niamh did very well at LA's as a FF, FS82 (GGGG). She was only 52 DIM at the Appraisal, but scored an Udder Trifecta: 35/42/35. Can not wait to see how her udder matures in her 2nd & 3rd lactations. Appraiser was concerned on her lack of Medial but, she was only 52 DIM on her first freshening. Her dam has linear score of 37 in Medial. Niamh's 3/4 sister scored a 20 in Medial on her 2nd Lactation & a 37 in her 4th Lactation. So we are not overly concerned about her Medial. Niamh is going to be a great on the stand just like her dam, Goldie, who is our best milker.

In 2024, our little Niamh kidding early with Quints. Unfortunately only 3 survived. Niamh had a bit of a tough time kidding and raising just 3 kids. She is a doe who puts all her ennergy into lactation. She does not leave much in reserve for herself. We will breed her one last time via AI in 2024 for her 3rd kidding in 2025. She is a great goat, and her kids are all very robust. It is best for her that we retire Niamh after the 2025 Kidding Season. She will live out her days in the herd with her daughter(s).

Laia is a Gold with Minimal White, with slight Roaning & Blue Eyes. She is hands down the sweetest little goat we own. She has been known to fall asleep in stranger's arms. She has turned out to be probably the best mama goat we have. She is just so sweet & patient with her kids. She is also Homozygous for Blue Eyes; all her kids will have blue eyes. Looking to get a Black Blue-Eyed doe out of her.

Laia is one of our Top 4 Milk producers. She should be able to earn her Milk Production Star when we go on our ADGA Milk Test. Not sure she is an Elite Doe, but a good milker non the less. She carries two copies of the A Variant for AlphaS1-Casein. Laia exceeded our expectations at 2021 Linear Appraisals. She scored very well for doe who was still not yet mature. Appraiser measured her at 22" but our ADGA Nigerian stick measures here at just under 21". Laia has matured very nicely in 2022. Her chest has broadened, and her body depth has grown. Yet, she still retains her dairy daintiness. Laia's udder on her fourth freshening was beautiful.

2023 was just not Laia's year at Linear Appraisals. She had a single kid became lopsided on her udder. Despite getting her on the stand as soon as we noticed the issue, Laia dried up on one side. Laia's FS does reflect this. Laia clearly improved her Linear Scores over her 2021 appraisal. She even hit the ideal range on several categories. In Structural Categories, Laia seemed not to do as well compared to her 2021 scores. In 2021 the appraiser LOVED her and suggested we get her to some shows. Hard to say what was going on for Laia in 2023. Not sure yet what to think of the new scoring system. We had too many variables in our herd this year to make a fair determination.

Laia was sold with her favorite, bonded daughter Moon. Laia & Moon were part of some very deep cuts made to our herd. They are both incredible breeding does. Now that we live back in Rhode Island we are not able to keep as many goats as we did in Mossyrock, Washington.

Moon is Gold with Abundant White & Blue Eyes. She is great-grand daughter to our best milker, Goldie. Moon is super calm & friendly; you almost don't notice her. She has two copies of the A variant for AlphaS1-Casein. Moo was competing with her dam for 2022's Best Mom Award. She has proven herself to be just an awesome mom, no drama & just a sweetie pie. No drama is a rare trait in Nigerian Goats. Moon's udder was very nice as a first freshener. We are very pleased with her first freshening. She was able to maintain body condition with quads, no small feat for such a petite goat. She also kidded without assistance; we did clean & dry off the kids as they did arrive close together. She also had her dam with her to help. Laia would have jumped the gate to get in if we tried to keep her out. We love seeing the strong maternal bonds in our herd.

We are very pleased with Moo's 2023 LA Scores. She is right where she should be in our herd. Moon is really quite a small goat so she is not as attention grabbing as some of our larger dairy girls. I expect she will steadily improve on her score over time. It didn't help that she was lopsided due to a single kid. She received a soft 54 code. Sol's girls are all very dairy and slow to mature.

Moo's 2024 3rd Freshening Udder was just beautiful! Makes me reqret putting her up for sale. Moon was sold with her dam Laia. Moon & Laia were part of some very deep cuts made to our herd. They are both incredible breeding does. Now that we live back in Rhode Island we are not able to keep as many goats as we did in Mossyrock, Washington.

Mags is just beautiful! She is a Blue Eyed Swiss Marked darling. She has the prettiest frosted ears. She is our first kid out of our buck, Tonic. Very good LA Scores, show & milk lines. She is A/A for Alpha-s1 Casein. Very excited to get her on the stand, to Linear Appraisals and time allowing to a few shows. We retained one of Mag's 2022 twin does and the other has gone to a show home. Mag's first freshening Udder was fabulous! We were very surprised as Mag's Dam, only received a Good Plus in Udder. Looks like we will use Mag's Sire, Rebel Acres SP Tanqueray, heavily for the 2022-2023 breeding season before selling him.

Mags & her sire did well at 2023 LA's. Tonic, her sire did so well we are no longer going to sell him! Mags does need to stretch that udder. We were milking twice a day and that was not doing her udder any favors. Appraiser noted that she is a very interesting doe that can handle more capacity in her udder. Quads would help set her up nicely. We will be only milking her once a day in 2024. Tempted to sign up for 2024 LA's just to get Mags and all my does that had singles in 2023 appraised.

Nella is out of one of our favorites does, EllaBella. Her sire, Sol, was our best rated buck at the time. Nella is just the sweetest little thing! Everyone who visited the farm to look at our available kids wanted her. We just couldn't sell her. We were not planning on keeping her. Sometimes you just keep a goat on a hunch. She is A/B for AlphaS1-Casein. We sold both her dam & sire for our move across country. Nella has great Pholia Farms lines from her dam & some solid AGS show lines from her sire. She will make a very nice out cross, as we move forward in our breeding. Nella freshened with quads in 2023 & she kidded without assistance! Nella's udder is a huge improvement on her dam's. Really excited to get her to LA's and see how much better she scores in udder. Hard to tell right now with quads draining her dry, but seems like she has improved teat diameter, placement, and udder attachment.

Nella's Final score was lower than we expected at 2023 LA's. Still trying to make sense of the new system for Final Score. Looking at her Linear & Structural categories, Nella is right where she should be as an immature first freshener. Really like how balanced her udder is, it is one of her strongest assets. She scored 34 in Fore Udder Attachment; Rear Udder Height & Rear Arch. Nella also has the best teat placement in our herd with at 34. Her dam, EllaBella, scored 18 in Fore Udder Attachment, 25 in Rear Udder Height & 21 in Rear Arch. As we suspected Nella's udder is really great improvement over her dams. Nella could use improvements in Body Depth, Strength & Medial Suspensory Ligament so she has been bred to Brewfm Rumpelstiltskin for 2024 kids. Rumple's sire & dam score well in Body Depth & Strength. Rumple's dam scored a 37 in Medial Suspensory Ligament. Keeping our fingers crossed for a few does out of this match.

We lost our sweet Goldie after a breif illness in April 2024. Her impact to our herd has been tremendous! We will miss her gentle leanins for scratches followed by a sneaky belch. She is just not replaceable. In all the years breeding her and her daughters & sons we have not had any that could out match her on the stand. She really was our perfect goat.

Goldie is gold with a broken belt & has the loveliest golden eyes. She might have moonspots. When we clipped her in June 2021, we discovered small freckle sized brown spots in her gold coat. She does have a son with moonspots. We assumed he got them from his sire. Her daughter, Niamh also has moonspots. We can't speak highly enough about this goat; she is friendly, QUIET and great on the milk stand. Day in and day out Goldie is our most consistent and usually our top milk producer. Only Laia seems to be able to match her in our herd. She doesn't have any fancy awards, but we can count on her for our yogurt, cheese and soaps. Goldie was the first goat we tested for ALPHA-s1 CASEIN. She is A/A, which just confirms what we already knew. Her milk fat content is high. Goldie was shown as a youngster and has 1 Grand win. One of Goldie's daughters has a Reserve win, so her offspring can be shown successfully.

We are very satisfied with Goldie's Linear Scores. She is an older doe who has had quite a few kids, and it shows, think petting zoo condition. She received an E in Body Capacity & a V in Udder. The appraiser, who is particular on udders, really liked her and loved her udder! She is very easy to hand milk. Goldie's son Jacobim is sire to Kastor & Lola. We are very happy with how Kastor & Lola have matured. So, as we can't afforded to clone Goldie, we have retained another of her boys instead, Rumpelstiltskin. Goldie does have an PTI Index, but she has never been on test. Primrose is a Chamoisee-Buckskin, just like her mama. We are so excited about her. We sold her two older full sisters and regretted it. She is just beautiful, despite her tiny horn. Can't wait to see what this little leggy girl can do. She is our herd's official greeter. Prim never misses out on free scratches. She freshened in 2023 with twin boys. She managed to kid on her own without any human help. Well, we did help dry them off. She didn't skip a beat when they were born, unlike her dam who bolted into the stall wall when presented with her 1st newborn. Her first udder is just as expected. All of Little's girls have the cutest little udder at FF.

Prim was at a very awkward stage in her development when presented at LA's. It is reflected in her score. Appraiser noted that she has lots of good bits, but she is still immature. Her dam was slow to mature, so not overly concerned. Prims dam just received FS88 (VEEG) at age five.

Mara is a lovely Brown Roan Chamoisee with minimal White & Blue Eyes. Mara is a very nicely bred goat. Lots of good Linear Scores & Show History in her pedigree. Mara is A/B for AlphaS1-Casein. Mara freshened with triplets in 2022 and was a good mama once her dam let her take care of the kids. Pushy grandmas run in this maternal line. Mara's grandma had an epic melt down when Mara was born. Mara's FF udder was just great, unfortunately with our move we did not get very good pictures. Sorry about that. Can't wait to see how Mara does at our next Linear Appraisal. Thinking she will do as well or better than her 1/2 sister, Laia, did in 2021. We did not get Mara on the stand in 2022. We just had too much going on with the move & then immediate renovations on the new farm. Padme, Mara's 2022 doe, nursed for 9+ months before she weaned her. We are certain she will be able to go 305 days on test. Her dam and both her grandmothers are strong milkers.

Mara freshened with Quad Boys in 2023. The quads were incredibly aggressive nursing. In hindsight we should have pulled the boys and bottle fed them. Her udder was not like it was the year prior. Not sure what is going on. Might have been the quad boys or could just be genetics. The quads drained all of Mara's energy, she was very thin at LA's. LA Appraiser noticed her condition. Mara was not marked for any udder defects. Hoping in 2024 we will see improvement.

Tini is nice and quiet. Like her half-sister Moon you really don't notice her in the herd. She has two copies of the A Variant for AlphaS1-Casein. Tini's dam is Laia, one of our highest rated does. Her sire is Tonic, who is producing some seriously nice does. Tini's FF Udder is absolutley beautiful! Getting super excited to take her to LA's this year. Pictures are of her unclipped 10 day fresh udder. We will take clipped & staged photos once her boy is weaned and she is on the milkstand.

Tini had a single in 2023 and her udder did get a bit lopsided. You can see her affected udder in the pictures. This is also why she does not have any pictures taken later as it was just not worth doing. Hope to get some 2024 pictures from her new owners. She did do alright at LA's but her udder did not present as well as it could have. Tini scores are within the new average for FF, so not overly concered. She will mature in to a very nice doe.

EllaBella, Mr Brown and Ella's 2022 kids, Panda & Pedro, have gone to live across the street with our neighbors in Mossyrock WA. They will make quite a happy little starter herd. Ella & Mr Brown are 1st cousins & Mr Brown has been our most dependable babysitter. He is also kid safe.

EllaBella is black & white w/abundant roaning and Blue Eyes. She has excellent milking lines with 4 Superior Genetics & 3 Champions in her pedigree. Our EllaBella improved her score this year at Linear Appraisals. We could't be happier for her. She had a clip, not quite a show quality one since she decide to lay down on the milkstand in protest. None the less it was enough for the appraiser to get a good look at her. She was quite shaggy for the 2019 appraisal. For the first time, EllaBella ranks in our Top 3 Milk Producers! We changed to a milking machine this year so aparently she has been holding back quite a bit. According to her previous owner, Ella's Dam, Olympia was great the milkstand. Mockingbird went to her new home in Blaine, WA in February 2022. Mockingbird was our Alpha Doe, and the best mama around. Mockingbird is a Brown Light Belly with minimal white & has beautiful Blue Eyes. She has cream moonspots on her belly. We thought they were just part of her tan belly till we clipped her. We have retained her daughters Katniss & Magpie. Katniss scored a FS86 (+VV+) @ 02-10, at her first appraisal.

Mockingbird was shown as youngster & senior yearling. She has 2 Champions in her pedigree & her Dam & Grand-dam were shown. We took her to 2021 Linear Appraisals as a seven year old. The timing was not great for her, but she was still able to be evaluated. We were very surprised at her score. She did super well considering she was almost dry when evaluated. Through no fault of her own she was never developed as a milker. Her udder gets better every year, she just does not stay in milk for long. Her daughter Katniss has no problem in that area. Appraiser had her at 22" in Height, but when we measured her at home with our official ADGA Nigerian stick she was 21".

Katniss went to her new home in Estacada, Oregon in February 2022. She is awesome, we just had to start cutting our girls back. She is nice and quiet just like her dam, Mockingbird. She is dark brown with minimal white. Katniss was a first time Mom in 2020 and had 4 healthy kids. She even delivered them without assistance and 2 were breech! Her kids were actually a bit on the chubby side by weaning time. We might need to bottle raise her kids in the future, since she seems to be producing too much milk. She tested A/B for AlphaS1-Casein. Katniss scored a very respectable FS86 (+VV+) @ 02-10 in 2021. She was a First Freshner and only 63 Days in Milk. We were very pleased with her score. Will be breeding her based on her Linear Traits for 2022. It will be interesting to see what the results are.

Leela was sold a pet only as she had serious complications in her first pregnancy. Our vet advised against breeding her in the future as she will likely have the same complications again. We will only breed young does as yearlings & to bucks that have smaller kids going forward. This was very unfortunate, as she was looking to be one of our top milkers, capable of earning a Milk Star. She has even better confirmation than her half sister Laia who just scored a FS87 (+VVV) at 2021 Linear's. She was such a nice goat that we will likely bred her Dam & Sire again for another doe. Leela is a Chamoisee Roan with White & Blue Eyes. She has very beautiful coloring that is deepening to a Mahogany and was likely homozygous for blue eyes.

"BabyGirl" & "Grinny" moved to their new home in Castle Rock, WA in January 2020. We had to make are tough decision to sell BabyGirl. We have her full brother as one of our bucks, AH-MISK-FARMS JACOBIM MUGATU, so it makes breeding her kids problematic long term. She was our first doeling born on the farm. She is beautiful Chamoisee Roan w/White & Light Blue Eyes. She is going to be great milker just like her mama. She received an E in Body Capacity and an E in Back. Her oldest daughter, BrewFM Laia, just received a FS87 (+VVV) @ 02-02 at 2021 Linear Appraisals! "Grinny" and "BabyGirl" moved to their new home in Castle Rock, WA in January 2020. Grinny was a pet most of her life until she was bred at 6 years. She is a Roan Buckskin with white spots. Grin did really well at 2019 Linear Appraisal for an old girl. She scored a 42 in Udder Depth & recieved an E in Rump. Her son THE UD SOL scored an 86 as a young buck! Our Sweet Lilly had to be put down after a freak head butting accident in March 2022. We were there when it happened and quickly transported her to our incredible vet. Lilly was partially paralyzed. Our hope was that she could be stabilized and might eventually be able to get around in a wheeled cart. Lilly's faithful bestie, EllaBella, would not leave her side. It became clear however, after a week of rest, that her quality of life was not going to be great. Lilly had decided she was ready. She did not suffer much as she was on pain medicine till the end. She was 4 months pregnant at the time of her injury. Not only did we lose Lilly, we lost her kids with Little. This was a repeat breeding. We had sold her 2021 boys as bucks and regretted not keeping one. I see her sweet face in her daughter Lola everyday. Lola would make her dam proud, she is carrying the pushy grandma tradition. Lilly will be missed, my husband still sings her little ditty. All of our girls have their own milkstand tune.

Lilly is a brown Striped Light Belly with minimal white & has beautiful Blue Eyes. Lilly has excellent milking lines with 4 Superior Genetics on her pedigree. Her full brother, Caprinos SA Cosmos, has earned SG status. Lilly only has 1 functioning udder. Lilly lost her right udder to mastitis before we acquired her. Our sweet Lilly still keeps up the rest of our does on the milkstand. She has no problem dam raising kids. She calls them over individually to nurse, never would have believed it. She is very disciplined mom. Lilly did awesome at 2019 Linear Appraisals; we almost didn't bring her since she could be excused. We are so glad we did; she scored a 50 in Teat Diameter & 40 in Teat Length! Lilly was our highest final scoring doe in 2019. She really is a special goat, and we are so grateful that we were able to acquire her.

We retained her daughter Lola in 2019. Lola exceeded our expectations on the milkstand as a First Freshener and was one of or top 3 producers. We hope to retain as many of Lilly's girls has we can.

Olympia was a heavily roaned black & white goat. She was described as a buckskin as a youngster, but later in life she showed no indication of being a buckskin. We owned Olympia's daughter EllaBella. We also owned Olympia's half sister, Lilly. She was bred by Quail Run Hollow. Olympia had some very nice milk lines we were hoping to integrate into our herd. We unfortunately lost Olympia in March 2019. She was just four years old.

Sol & Mr Bojangles went to live in Graham, WA in April 2022. Sol will be helping a 4-H youngster learn about goat breeding. It is a great fit, as he & Bo are super gentle and easy to handle.

Sol improved on his score at 2021 Linear Appraisals. His FS is the same, but he scored an Excellent in Dairy Character & Body Capacity! Sol's first daughter was also appraised in 2021, FS86 (+VV+). We can't wait to see how his other daughters, Moonbeam, Nella Bella & Piper do in the future. His girls all very dairy.

Sol is a dark Buckskin and has sired 3 Abundant White kids on 3 different Dams. He is over breed size limit, but so far, he is not throwing size or his buckskin pattern on his daughters. His girls are not big, ranging from 17 to 20 inches tall. Visitors are always surprised Sol isn't a bottle baby. His kids are just adorable. Sol is also carries two copies of the A Variant for Alpha-s1 Casein. This means he will always pass one on to his offspring.

Our Biggy went to live with his buddy Mr. Black in Onalaska, WA in April 2022. He will enjoy being King of the Castle at his new home.

Big is Chamoise with slight roaning & minimal white. He also has a few Moonspots. He is passing this on to his kids, but most only have one or two spots. Big does throw a lot of white on his kids. He has the sweetest disposition that he passes onto his kids. Big is also passing on improvements in Rear Arch, Rear Udder Height & Medial Suspensory Ligament. His dam, Goldie, is our best milker. She is a NC PROMISEDLAND RB RAMPAGE descendant.

At 2021 Linear Appraisals, Big improved his score. We were really please since we think he is a really great buck. Big also carries one copy of each A & B Variant for Alpha-s1 Casein. This means he will always pass one on to his offspring. Big is over breed size limit, but so far he is not throwing size on his daughters. We do not breed him to our immature does, as his kids are 3-4lbs at birth. BREWFM LOLA was 3lbs 14oz at birth but she is our most dainty little doe at 19" tall. She doesn't weight over 65lbs. In our herd larger birth weight does not correlate to large adult.

Chippie has been diagnosed with Carpal Hyperextension, CH. It was first noticed at Linear Appraisal in August of 2023. Our very experienced vet confirmed the CH diagnosis at our Fall Breeding Wellness Check in September 2023. We have pulled him from breeding. The disease is progressing extremely fast in Chippie, he will likely need to be put down in the near future. He is a super sweet goat we don't want him to suffer. For those who have experienced this insidious disease you understand how this has shaken our breeding program to the core. For those who have not encountered CH, I sincerely hope you never do. It runs in most if not all the top bloodlines as the Nigerians are so inbred. The disease seems to be recessive, and skips generations. It likely requires 2 copies of the gene, one form the sire and one from the dam, to produce the disease. There is no cure for this genetic condition. Chippie's kids will likely have inherited one copy of the CH gene from him. They are all likely carries of this disease. Currently there is not a genetic test available. We have 4 of his daughters retained out of our best does. They are all just so confirmationally correct, some of the best goats we have bred. We will hold them for now, hoping for a genetic test in the future. A test would allow us to cull those animals with the disease before they are used for breeding.

Chippie is bred top & bottom, SUGAR MOON ROCKY DOLBY (RAM-BEAU/PALOMA). His dam is an Elite Doe. His sire was selected for the Young Sire Development Program in 2020. Chippie's pedigree is outstanding!

When we picked him up at 6 months old, he was just the cutest little goat. I forgot to ask if he was a bottle baby, as he is a super friendly. little guy. He is quite the little jabber-box too. The girls all seem to just love him, must be the wattles. Chippie also has dark brown moonspots, and yes the big spot in his belt is a moonspot. His base color is Milk Chocolate. He is a "solid" brown Buckskin. All his kids in 2022 were all Buckskin with only 2 Gold exceptions. He likely is Homozygous for Buckskin, will confirm with 2023 kidding's. His first crop of kids are just great! Most are leggy, long in body with wide rear stances. They are dairy without being too dainty. He currently has daughters in 5 herds.

Chip has filled out quite a bit in 2022. He has broadened nicely in the chest, but is still very refined. Clipping him is going to be tedious with all his skin wrinkles. Pretty sure he looks like a Shar Pei under all that hair. Chippie will only be around 2 1/2 years old, but we will have him evaluated at 2023 LA's. His score will reflect that he is not yet mature.
